The Yankees have played like crap over the past week, failing to win a single baseball game since eking out an extra-innings victory over an awful Orioles team last Friday. Still, at that point, they were a game and a half above Boston in the Wild Card race, and six and a half in front of Toronto, who trailed three other teams.So much can change in just a handful of days at this point in the season. If the Yankees lose tonight and the Blue Jays do what the Yankees were unable to do for most of last weekend , then the collapse will be complete. Their losing streak will reach seven games and they will be out of a playoff spot for the first time since August 16th, essentially negating their 13-game winning streak. Incredible.The only thing standing in the way of this fate? Another team that cant get out of its own way: the Mets. This Subway Series is shaping up to be one of the least impressive matchups in its 24-year history. The Mets descent from the top of the NL East has been more drawn-out than the Yankees collapse, but its been perhaps even more excruciating for their fans. The only teams theyve routinely beaten since the trade deadline are the Nationals and Marlins, and even they snapped back in the past week, each defeating the Mets twice.The Yankees should absolutely dispatch the Mets this weekend, but, well, they shouldve done that to the Orioles with ease last weekend. So who knows what to expect? Its up to Jordan Montgomery to keep the Mets bats at bay while hoping that his offense does something that theyve failed to do almost all season long and actually score runs for him.Since this games at Citi Field, theres no DH.
